High School Summer Internship Program

About

The Florida International University Center for Translational Science (FIU-CTS) High School Summer Internship Program is aimed towards highly motivated Junior and Senior High School Students. We collaborate with St. Lucie County Public Schools, and information on how to join the program will be available through your school by March 2025. Our next session is scheduled for June 9 through July 10, 2025.

*Please note: This program is currently only open for students who live and attend school in St. Lucie County.

Students will experience five (5) weeks of biomedical science research guided by expert scientists in different fields including:

  • Aging and Wellness
  • Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury
  • Drug Discovery and Delivery
  • Heart and Pulmonary Physiology, and Pathology
  • Inflammation, Infection and Immunity
  • Mitochondria and Metabolism
  • Neuroscience

Program Details

You will experience the following during the internship:

  • Learn how the scientific process leads to generating new knowledge.
  • Work with some of the top scientists in their fields, and network with professional contacts.
  • Work in state-of-the-art labs conducting experiments and obtaining results.
  • Learn how to apply problem solving skills, gain critical thinking, investigate hypotheses, and apply the scientfic method.
  • Develop tools that will help you determine your career path in science.
  • Showcase what you’ve learned at the CTS High School Summer Internship Luncheon.
  • Receive your scientific poster to use in future competitions. Winners will also receive a prize certificate.
  • Receive a participation certificate and a letter signed by the Program Director.
  • Earn over 100 volunteer hours if you complete the 5-week program.
Expectation
  1. Students are expected to have reliable transportation (whether student or parent).
  2. Students must commit to completing the full 5-week internship program.
  3. Dress code strictly enforced for biosafety:
    • No open-toe shoes (sandals with socks are considered open-toe).
    • No exposed skin on the legs. No shorts allowed.
